The Perfect Instagram Backdrop

February 11, 2016

In my Instagram Workshops, I talk a lot about different props that I use for Instagram photos, and I thought I’d share exactly how I created my wood platform with you! I’m always creating content not just for myself, but for my clients, so different backdrops are so important for variation.

We can’t all have gorge whitewashed floors, so this platform is the next best thing. I used FAT Paint chalk-style paint in Warm White to make the perfect Instagram backdrop, and here’s how:

First, you need the wood. I wanted something that was semi-lightweight so it was mobile, and so off to Home Depot I went. I grabbed 4 cedar 3×4’s and then had them cut in half right at Home Depot. I liked this particular wood because it had some texture and knots in it, giving it a more organic look, while keeping it from looking too rustic.

You need a backing to keep your wood together, so some plywood scraps were nailed through to the back, and then in order to prevent any floor damage, we added cardboard strips sealed with painters tape to add cushion to the feet. You would also use those little felt dots!

Once you’ve secured the planks together with the plywood and nails, stain the raw light wood in a darker colour: mix 1 part FAT Paint’s Bitter Chocolate or Cast Iron to three parts water to thin it out a bit, and then paint it on in the direction of the grain. Let dry completely.

Once you have your darker stain for depth, you’re ready to get it white. Mix 1 part FAT Paint to two parts water – or three parts water for less opacity – and give the planks a white wash, again in the direction of the grain. Repeat this process for a second coat. If you want the darker paint to shine through a little bit, sand lightly in a few strategic spots (we didn’t do this, but it would give that vintage look!)

Now, you’re ready to stage those Instagram shots! Love using this for food, shoe shots, and product shots. It makes the perfect backdrop, doesn’t it?
