How I Deal With Stress

April 12, 2017

I had planned for 2017 to be a little slower than 2016. Life is not a perfect storm, and this isn’t really happening. I have the biggest pet peeve of the glorification of BUSY.

Me: “how have you been?”

Them: “Good… busy”

I make a valiant effort to NOT let that be my default, and give a little detail about what’s new instead. In fact, I’ve been busier than ever, and although I’m being choosy about the projects I take on, the amount of quality client work has increased. I’m not easily stressed, but when things start to hit a boiling point, the biggest way I cope is by having something to look forward to!

I love having something coming up that I’m excited about – something as simple as a brunch with a girlfriend on the weekend, a fun piece of content I created coming out, or something like a trip or a celebration. This year is very, very busy with work, travel for work, but luckily, we have some fun vacations planned as well. I thought it would be fun to detail a few things coming up that I’m excited about this year to reflect on what’s to come.

‘All About Me’ Women’s Weekend  at Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Living in Vancouver means being so close to Whistler, and while I’m most definitely NOT an avid skier, I love getting up there for the air, restaurants, and some relaxation. I actually wrote a post about the non-skiers guide to Whistler for BCLiving if you’re looking at getting up there yourself. April 28 – 30, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler is throwing a weekend retreat for you and your bestie, Mom (early Mother’s Day gift, maybe?) or in my case, my sis! I’m having my sis fly in from Edmonton (her first time away from her daughter Ariana since she was born in July!) to join me on this fun weekend full of workshops, activities, meals, wine… I cannot wait to spend quality time with her. OH, and then I’m back to Whistler the next weekend to work with the Tourism team on their May in Whistler campaign which is going to be SO fun!

San Fransisco Business Trips

I first went to SF about a year ago for client Vintner’s Daughter, and we fell. in. LOVE. Here’s my trip recap if you are planning a trip yourself. I felt so at home, and adored everything about that amazing city! Fast forward to this year, and we have two new clients in SF (one of them being International Orange, the best spa in SF, which means we will be receiving trial treatments as well, SO dreamy!), so Roberto and I are heading there at the end of this month and in May for a few days each time to shoot client content. Recos ALWAYS welcome!

Portugal

I can’t even believe it, but we’re heading to Portugal in June for close to a month! It’s always been a dream of mine to create a life that allows me to work from anywhere, and it’s actually happening! I fell in looooove with this country when we were there in September. Roberto is Portuguese, and his family has a home in the Algarve, so we will be staying there for the month, AND, the best part is that I get to bring my mom, sis and niece with us as well! My mom and sis are both world travellers having been to almost anywhere you could name (I’m the travel slack in the fam… my sister shows of by speaking 5 languages: English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Korean and maybe soon to be Portuguese ha), but they’ve never been to Portugal. Roberto is so excited to show them his country, and now is the time. With my mom getting older and not being well due to a lifetime of Rheumatoid Arthritis, we’re making this happen. I’m so lucky to have a job that allows me to work remotely, along with clients who can work around the time difference!

Roberto Turning 40

Man, that was even hard to type! Roberto will be 40 years old in November (I met him when he was 27, wild!) and I plan to fully embrace this milestone. I have to leave it at that juuuust in case he’s reading 🙂

Expanding our Family

Something I haven’t spoken about a lot is our plan for babies. I’ve always wanted to be a MOM, like, when I was a little kid, I envisioned it. My mom has always said how “maternal” I am, and she’s right. Roberto and I have been trying for about a year to get pregnant, and have taken a bit of a break to reset and start trying again during our Portugal vacay. I have to admit that being a solopreneur meant that I have been focused on building my business, so adding a baby into the mix had to be a well measured decision and timing was important. Now, I am fully ready and we can’t wait for it to happen! I’m not stressed at all, but I turn 36 this year so there is definitely a greater sense of urgency. Once we get back from Portugal, I have some appointments lined up to check into the whole thing.
