I have an insane amount of digital “stuff” to keep in check. From my various Sparkle Media clients, spreadsheets, content images, project flows and emails (how do those creep up minute by minute?!), staying on top of it is a MUST and essential to my success. Sometimes it can seem like your digital life is more trouble than it’s worth! Instead, you’re buried in emails, files, photos, and don’t even get started on the randomness of your laptop’s desktop. I pegged it, didn’t I?
1. Hit Unsubscribe.
Those e-mail newsletters can sometimes be helpful (that 50-percent off sale isn’t going to shop itself!), but most often, they are an annoyance that clogs up your inbox. It’s easy to unsubscribe to those that aren’t applicable to your interests. Scroll down to the bottom of the email and hit unsubscribe. Most times you’ll be good to go, but some may require you tick off some boxes or enter your email address. I promise you’ll feel a little calmer with less clutter in your inbox. 2. Switch To Online Billing And Payments.
Paper bills are not only a waste of paper, but they can often pile up, unopened. OK, perhaps that’s just me? Log on to your accounts, sign up for the email billing options and receive your invoices to the place you hang out most often (no, not Instagram), your inbox! I suggest setting up the bill payments through your online banking, and even setting up reoccurring auto-payments for static monthly bills if you really want to kick it up a notch.
3. Clean Up Your Computer.
This sounds daunting, but it’s so much easier than you may think. With storage options becoming pricey, and files becoming larger, digital storage space on your laptop is probably getting scarce. It’s good practice to stay on top of deleting files you no longer need, moving older files you still need to external hard drives and filing your photos and documents regularly. Well, if that’s just not going to happen, chances are you’ll need a good disk-cleaning app, which is why I love Omni Disk Sweep and use it once I start getting those “disk space low” messages. It maps out your hard drive, showing you the size of each file and directory, allowing you to decide more easily what can be deleted or moved off-site.
4. Use Digital Planner Sheets.
It’s easy, albeit unproductive, to go back and forth between creating digital lists and paper lists, but that can get pretty chaotic. Double that if you work in a job that requires a lot of project management over various projects (hands up!). Well, Saffron Avenue just released these amazing digital and printable planners that allow you to use your iPad to organize projects, blogs, social media and whatever else you have going on. It’s the best of both worlds, because you can write on them using an iPad and a stylo, and even print them out for a binder or file folder.
5. Practice Content Control.
Posting to social media is a hobby for many. However, as more and more people work on growing their personal brands, or even managing social media for their business or clients, content organization can be a challenge. While there isn’t an app that has the ability to actually post to Instagram for you (Instagram does not allow third-party posting), Planoly is the next best thing.
