an urban picnic on robson street

July 12, 2015

I seriously LOVE entertaining. as I move through life, I’ve learned that it’s also something that I do quite well! I’ve found so much joy in my home, decorating, and feeding loved ones! I’ve worked with Robson Street before, and when they asked me to host an intimate media lunch to promote their Pop-Up Picnic area, I was so excited!

For bigger projects with plenty of lead time, I’ll usually start a secret pinboard to hold inspiration… I find this useful to really see what i’m attracted to, and I let this guide me. I never copy anything I see – I want everything I do to be authentic to my taste. For this project, I only had 10 days to pull it together, so I simply used the idea of an urban picnic, and went from there. I knew I had a space (in this case, a small patio area right on Robson and Thurlow), tables, chairs, and a takeout menu (the meals had to be chosen from the restaurants on Robson Street since this event was to promote the picnic area space that is ‘popped up’ for the summer, only).

Working with that, I had a small budget to pull together other elements like the linens from Taffete Designs, napkins, cutlery, drinks, flowers and extras. I always like to create unique elements, so I used my own personal vases, cake stands, straws, mason jars, and made special placecards out of custom hasthtag macarons from Sweet Bake Shop.

A little goodie bag full of Karameller Candy (in red and white, of course!) was the perfect take away. While I wanted the picnic to feel elevated, I wanted to stay true to the rustic ‘picnic’ feel, and added some watermelon, a vintage picnic basket (from Whiskey and Cake Home) and garden flowers from Flower Factory. When hosting, I always consider the comfort of my guests so I wanted to make them feel special, and give them plenty of opportunity for a great time, conversation with friends, and of course, the perfect photo opp! It was such a fun day – cannot wait until next time!
